Before we show you how to leverage your Google My Business listing to get a 5 star review, first it's important to understand what Google My Business is and why it's an important marketing tool for your business.

What is Google My Business?

Google My Business (GMB) is a "free and easy-to-use tool for businesses and organisations to manage their online presence across Google, including Search and Maps." (Google Support)

GMB helps your existing customers find you and attracts new customers when they are searching for businesses like yours.

It's important that the information that shows up for your business is accurate, complete and optimised.

Google My Business has made it possible for customers to leave positive or negative feedback online about their experience with your business.

Online reviews are an important part of attracting new visitors who hopefully convert into customers.

Business reviews appear next to your listing in Google Maps and Google's Search Engine results page. Reviews can help your business stand out on Google!

Encourage your customers to spread the word about your business by creating and sharing a custom link with them that they can click on and be taken directly to the location where they can leave you a default 5 star review.

How to create a Google My Business customer review URL pre-filled with 5 stars

On a mobile device, such as an iPhone or Android:

1. Create an Google My Business account if you don't already have one. https://www.google.com/business

2. Open the Chrome Browser

3. Open a New Incognito Tab

4. Type in Google.com.au (or your business' location country)  into the URL bar and press GO

5. Search for your business name eg FatGalah

6. Press on your business GMB details

7. Scroll down until you see the "Rate and Review"

NOTE: you may have to press on the down arrow that says "More about [your business]"

8. Tap on the star furthest to the right. This should highlight all 5 stars. This will be the default rating that gets copied with the URL that you share with your customers.

9. You will be taken to a sign in screen. Don't worry you won't need to sign it. What we want is the URL in the address bar

10. Press and hold down in the address bar until "Select All" appears

11. Press "Select All" and the press "Copy"

Top tip:

The link is rather long, so use a link shortening program eg. bit.ly  An added bonus is that bit.ly can track click data, geographic location and more, providing you with useful stats.

Create a personalised link eg https://fatgalah.com.au/review


Then send a personalised email to your customer.


Here's an example:

Hi Bob,

It was a pleasure working on your project!

Would you mind taking a moment to leave [Your business name] a short and honest review on our Google My Business listing?

You can leave your review here – https://fatgalah.com.au/review [Hyperlink using your shortened link]

Thank you,

Your Name
Your business name


Note: Your customer must have a google account of some sort to be able to leave a review.

IMPORTANT: It's against Google review policies to solicit reviews from customers by offering incentives or setting up review stations at your place of business. Reviews that violate the policy may be removed.

Be sure to go login to your Google My Business account as your business and respond with a personal note to every review, both positive and negative.

Responding to positive reviews helps build stronger relationships with existing customers while responding to negative reviews provides an opportunity to improve your brand and customer service by showing that you care and are attentive to customer complaints.
