How to: Find out where your domain is registered and who registered it

Most people register their domain at one place and then have their website hosted elsewhere.

It's important that you know where your domain is registered and that you know the username and password.

Be sure that YOU actually own it and that it's not under the control of someone else (eg the webmaster who originally built your website).

Why?

It makes good business sense to have control over the things your business owns. Your domain name is a valuable asset which you need to protect.

Should you ever want to make any changes to your domain ie sell, renew, cancel or transfer your domain name to another Registrar, you will need to know the username and password to access the control panel.

What's the easiest way to find out who registered my domain and where it's located?

1. Visit http://whois.domaintools.com/

whois.domaintools.com home page

2. In the search box, type in your domain name (for FatGalah it would be fatgalah.com) and click 'Search'

3. When the results are displayed, look for 'Registrar'.

4. Scroll to the bottom of the displayed result. Under the 'Whois Record' you'll see 'Registrant Name' and the name of the organisation (if there was one).

NOTE: When a domain is registered you have the option of selecting a privacy setting. If the Registrant made their details private, then you may not see any information.
